About Morgan City Power
Morgan City Power Department is a member of the American Public Power Association (APPA). The APPA helps us to navigate legal and political landscapes as well as offer advice for operations through education and peer experience. As long as Morgan City owns it's system the customers are also part owners. Having the options of ownership allows us to make the best decisions for our customers while delivering safe, competitive and reliable power to Morgan City homes and businesses.
Morgan City Power Department is also a member of the Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) which is a political subdivision of the State of Utah that provides comprehensive wholesale electric-energy, transmission, and other energy services, on a nonprofit basis, to community-owned power systems throughout the Intermountain West. UAMPS members are located throughout Utah, California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Currently there are 48 members that comprise UAMPS.
The power that Morgan City runs off of comes from several different projects:
- CRSP - Colorado River Storage Project - Glen Canyon Dam (hydro)
- Hunter Project - Hunter II - Emery County (coal)
- Horse Butte Project - 16 miles East of Idaho Falls (wind)
- Nebo Power Station - Payson, UT (gas)
- Pool Projects - (solar, wind, geothermal, any form)
- Carbon Free Power Project - Idaho National Laboratory (nuclear) projected for 2029
The power that is generated from these projects is wheeled to Morgan City through Rocky Mountain's transmission lines. The electric service area within Morgan City limits is approximately 4 square miles. Our system consists of 28 miles of transmission and distribution lines with 3 substations.
